VPN Protocols – Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:32 AM PDT

In my upcoming series I will be throwing some light on the various VPN protocols that are being used to provide different VPN services. VPN services have popped up like crazy in last few years and it has become important for Internet users to understand the intricacies of VPN services so that they aren’t easily fooled. There is nothing worst than giving away money for a pathetic service.

For starters we will throw light on PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol) which was developed by Microsoft in association with many other technology companies. PPTP is said to be the most widely used VPN method when compared to the other available protocols.

An important point worth noting is that PPTP does not comes loaded with authentication or encryption features. It solely relies on tunneling in order to implement security functionality. With time various companies have started to push out their own form of PPTP which comes loaded with various security features. One must understand that the base PPTP format isn’t secure but it can be made secure.

PPTP can be considered as an extension of  PPP (Point to Point Protocol) which happens to be the link layer protocol that is used to transmit IP packets over serial links. Authentications similar to that of PPP can be used with PPTP connections. PPTP can be used with Microsoft Point to Point Encryption (shortly termed as MPPE) protocol in order to make it secure. Due to the exclusion of many features PPTP becomes faster when compared to different other protocols.

PPTP was built by Microsoft henceforth most of the PPTP services are already installed in the Windows Operating System. This makes it easy for users to trust PPTP based VPN services as these won’t request you to install any software. PPTP based VPN will simply use the already installed PPTP client in Windows Operating System thus making life quiet easy.

Linux does not comes loaded with PPTP but clients for Linux based machines are available on the Internet. MAC based machines come loaded with PPTP support with third party clients also available for MAC. PPTP VPN services are well know around the Internet henceforth you will see that many firewalls do support various PPTP based services. Lastly, some of the Android based cell phones also support PPTP.

With advent of time multiple security vulnerabilities were found with PPTP based VPN services which resulted in other protocols popping up. We will learn more about other protocols in my upcoming articles.

Why Internet Users Must Use VPN? – Part II

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 12:06 AM PDT

As promised, after my first list Why Internet Users Must Use VPN? – Part I, here goes the part 2. When I was about to start this article I was confused as to what else should I write? It looked like I had already covered everything in part I of this series. After some digging and googling I knew I was wrong. Internet is full with brick walls and situations where users are forced to either leave the scene or try to camouflage themselves in order to fool the service. This is when VPN services come in handy and their uses just don’t seem to come to an end.

2 creative ways to use VPN Service

I guess I did well to wait for the weekend to be wrapped up before I compile this article. I got the chance to read Heryzo’s 2 creative ways and I must say they are really very much unique. Sometimes, it is your daily lifestyle which helps you innovate new ways out during problems and this article is just the same. It gives you a brush with your daily problems and how you can tackle those with the help of VPN services.

Download Files Without Waiting

I am sure we all have been through road blocks where a website would ask us to either register to download our next file or wait for XX minutes in order to download that file. These websites track your IP address and block it for XX minutes so as to force you to register. The best that you can do is either restart your Internet Connection (if your ISP gives you dynamic IP address) or otherwise use VPN service to hide your IP address. No more wait times while downloading nulled themes or cracked softwares ;)

Avoid Tracking

You know this, right? The moment you are up to something suspicious on the Internet then you are inviting authorities to grab you. Although it depends on the intensity of your activity before they actually think about catching you. With a VPN service you can hide your IP address even from your ISP (if your VPN service is really good) and that helps you surf the Internet anonymously! Go crack the whip and spill some blood. Nobody will ever know if it was you.

Avoid Hot Spot Sniffing

With the advent of Wi-Fi technology, Hot Spots have popped up in almost every busy place on this planet. Airports, coffee shops and hotels have Wi-Fi hot spots and we are happy to use them. Recently, hackers have used such Wi-Fi hot spots to hack into various other computers using the same Wi-Fi. This is when a fake IP helps a lot. You are safe if you cover yourself under a VPN service. Nobody will be able to track if you are even present on that Wi-Fi.

I am sure that you guys have much more uses of VPN and I would love to know them. I will include them in my upcoming articles with proper backlinks :)

2 Creative Ways for Using a VPN Service

Posted: 14 Aug 2011 09:46 PM PDT

Let’s take a very different perspective on this following article, would you?

Most of the times, as a customer, you are given a plethora of choices when it comes to chosing a VPN service. But this scenario is assuming that you are already convinced that you need to have a VPN solution, which means that you have already done some homework and decided it’d be a great solution to one of your problems. On this article, let’s assume that you don’t even know that a VPN service can be a solution to one of your problems, so let’s see things the other way round- let’s start by problems you may have as a user, and see how a VPN service can come handy

1- You are living abroad and want to access to some online resources that are only available to residents of your home country

We are living in a very mobile world now, and you may be away from your own country (be it for travel purposes, or for long-term work). It happens that you are homesick. It even happens that there’s that TV show that only your local TV is broadcasting. Let’s say for example that you are a British person travelling to Canada for a few weeks. There comes a time where you want to watch your favorite BBC program and where you wish you were in the comfort of your home and ready to watch it…You know that BBC iPlayer TV is giving you a way to watch the last 7 days shows online … but you’ve got to be in the UK in order to benefit from it… Now you wish you were in England, that’s your problem. And guess what? You can pretend to be in England by using a VPN service. Now all you have to do is chose a VPN service that offers UK-based IP address, grab some coffee and whatever you like having while watching TV, launch the VPN client, then launch BBC iPlayer.

2- Participate into online sweepstakes

Now let’s say that you are a regular online-deal-hunter. You are surely aware that there’s a lot of sweepstakes and online deals out there that are only limited to one region (usually in developed countries and on big cities). Let’s say that you are based in Denmark, and that the sweepstake is limited to US people.  You actually know that you can’t “bid” on sweepstakes where the prizes need to be physically sent to your home address- however electronic gifts (amazon gift cards, coupons, …) are perfect for you since all you get is an electronic code that can be redeemed online… If only you could pretend that you are a US-based person. Bling bling… VPN is your solution. Have your online e-mail address ready, chose a VPN solution, launch it, then enter the sweepstake – if you won, the instructions for redeeming the prize will be sent to your e-mail address….

Those are only few ideas for using a VPN service, now, tell us how you use a VPN service on the comment section.
