UK IT Departments Compromised by Lack of Capacity Posted: 09 Mar 2012 04:36 AM PST MTI, the specialist cloud infrastructure consultancy and integrator has found that 44% of IT professionals working in the UK feel that their team has not been given the capacity to accommodate increased demands placed on them, with only 11% able to say that they are fully resourced. The survey, which canvassed the opinions of over 100 IT professionals from around the UK found that reduction of capex budgets (49%), increasing volumes of data (48%) and demand for new technologies, such as cloud (43%), were among the biggest challenges that IT departments are tackling. The strain on British IT departments is further illustrated by the fact that meeting these increased demands is "significantly eating into the working week" for 50% of respondents, with a further 16% stating that the situation is either "catastrophic" or "overwhelming" and 15% struggling to make ends meet. The result of this is that 41% admit to having to significantly compromise or struggle to provide the service required. 27% feel that adding extra resource to IT departments would allow them to become a strategic tool to make their businesses more competitive, with 53% claiming that customer service would be improved. Lack of understanding acting as main barrier to cloud adoption Posted: 07 Mar 2012 02:55 AM PST Perceived risks over service control and fears over data sovereignty are the key issues that are restricting UK organisations from implementing cloud services, according to recent research from Claranet, the managed services provider. The research polled 300 senior IT decision-makers across a variety of sectors and business sizes and discovered the range of concerns that has led to 32 per cent of respondents delaying procuring cloud services for an average of 12 months. The three main barriers to cloud adoption have been identified as: fears about losing in-house control (46 per cent), confusion as to how cloud could benefit their organisation (43 per cent), and an organisational culture that is not prepared for a new approach to information technology (41 per cent). Q4 Threats Report Shows Malware Surpassed 75 Million Samples in 2011 Posted: 29 Feb 2012 03:29 AM PST McAfee today released the McAfee Threats Report: Fourth Quarter 2011, revealing that malware surpassed the company's estimate of 75 million unique malware samples last year. Although the release of new malware slowed in Q4, mobile malware continued to increase and recorded its busiest year to date. "The threat landscape continued to evolve in 2011, and we saw a significant shift in motivation for cyber attacks," said Vincent Weafer, senior vice president of McAfee Labs. "Increasingly, we've seen that no organisation, platform or device is immune to the increasingly sophisticated and targeted threats. On a global basis, we are conducting more of our personal and business transactions through mobile devices, and this is creating new security risks and challenges in how we safeguard our commercial and personal data." Malware The overall growth of PC-based malware actually declined throughout Q4 2011, and is significantly lower than Q4 2010. The cumulative number of unique malware samples in the collection still exceeds the 75 million mark.
