Turbulent quarter as hacktivism increases

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 12:03 PM PDT

After analysing vast numbers of IT threats during the second quarter of 2011, Kaspersky Lab announces the key trends in its latest quarterly malware report. Navigating the web remains the riskiest activity on the Internet, with malicious URLs that serve exploit kits, bots, ransomware Trojans, etc. being the most frequently detected objects online (65.44 per cent). 87 per cent of the websites used to spread malicious programs were concentrated in just 10 countries. The first two locations were the US and Russia. The Netherlands led the way in reducing the number of malicious hosting sites: compared to the previous quarter, its share has fallen by 4.3 per cent to 7.57 per cent. This is down primarily to the efforts of the Dutch police and includes the neutralising of botnets such as Bredolab and Rustock. Kaspersky Lab experts have divided countries into groups according to their local infection levels: High-risk countries (41-60 per cent unique users subject to web attacks) This group includes: Oman, Russia, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Belarus. Newcomers to this group in Q2 were Sudan and Saudi Arabia, while Kazakhstan dropped down a level. Average risk group (21-41 per cent) This group is made up [...]

Tips for Leaving No Trace When Using Someone Else’s Computer

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 02:01 AM PDT

Sometimes, you may have to use someone else’s computer for browsing the internet. How do you insure that you won’t be leaving your traces when you are leaving this computer?

If you are a Firefox user, most of the time, you would be using Firefox, enter your credentials for checking your e-mails, hanging out on Facebook, watching the news, … and the list goes on. Then you keep on reminding yourself to clear all browsing history when you’re done with the practical CTRL+SHIFT+DEL keystrokes.

On recent Firefox versions, you can decide to only clear the last hour browser activity, or everything … I personally found out that choosing to clear the latest hour history isn’t “safe enough” as I clearly lose track of time once I am on the internet, I don’t know about you. The same feature is available on Google Chrome by hitting “Ctrl +H”, then clicking on “Edit items”. The “good” thing about Google Chrome’s history feature is that you can pinpoint and chose whatever history you want to delete (ain’t that a great feature if you only want to leave the impression that you didn’t do anything nasty on the computer by leaving the browsing history “untouched?”)

Clearing the history can be a good idea only if you remember to do it when you’re done. However, chances are that you’re borrowing someone else’s computer because you just had a few spare time to use- and, as if Murphy’s law never fails, you usually have to hurry up leaving that computer for different reasons: an urgent phone call that kept you away for a long time, the pal you’ve been waiting for just showed up and asked you to hurry up because you’re late for another meeting … Then what? There’s a high risk you would forget clearing your browsing history …Even worse, you would even ask the computer owner to close your sessions – meaning, you’ll be leaving the responsibility  for protecting your own stuff to a third party … Hmm, that’s bad…Chances are they’ll take a sneak-peak into what you did first – you know- trying to find out the nasty things you may have done …

So how do you protect from those “unpredicted hurry” that don’t even let you clear your browsing history when working on someone else’s computer (or on a public computer?).  If we stick with the two browsers mentioned above, here’s how you’d do it:

- On Mozilla Firefox: at your initial launch, quickly hit “CTRL+SHIFT+P” (or go to “Tools- Start Private browsing”)

- On Google Chrome, still at your initial launch of the browser, hit  ”SHIFT+CTRL+N” (or got to the Settings menu, and click “new incognito window”)

Whether on Firefox, or on Chrome, a new window will then open – do your own things from this window as it won’t record your browsing history, nor your password, nor your site preferences. You’re safe, at least on the browser side of things (because you never know if there’s a keystroke recorder on the computer, nor if there’s a network sniffer somewhere on your network …but that’s another story). Now, when the urgent call rings, or when the Pal you’ve been waiting for just steps by and push you to leave, all you have to do is close the browser window and that’s it … No sessions to close, no browsing history to clear …You can leave the floor with peace of mind….

Hope this helped you…. Now we’d love to hear about experience using other people’s computer while maintaining privacy. Share on the comment section.

This news should be very interesting to all our visitors from USA.

We have learned few days ago (thanks to the H – Security) that all data stored on Google servers in Europe is easily available to the authorities in the US. This means that every single bit of information that us send and receive through one/any of the Google servers (we believe that this is the case with other companies as well) is remembered and send to USA when requested. That means searches made with Google and clicks from the Google site can reveal parts of your browsing history even if not trace of it has been left in your computer. This means that not only browsing history (this can be supplied by your ISP) but also search phrases can be attached to your name.

If you have thought previously that clearing your browsing history, cookies, etc. will keep you anonymous in the net you were seriously mistaken.

If you value your privacy and anonymity, we strongly suggest for you to look into the ways of preserving it – like TOR project or well known and recommended VPN services. We also urge you to be extra careful when you find a service that is completely free (you can find out more here).

Why Internet Users Must Use VPN? – Part I

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 12:31 AM PDT

Lately, I have been asked questions about the importance and usage of VPN services. VPNs are a good option in cases when either your IP address is blocked or in cases when you don’t want to reveal your identity on the Internet. Let’s face it, we got to hide ourselves and our activities at some point or our lives. This is when VPN becomes super important.

Although, there will be numerous advantages when it comes to using VPNs yet I will list down few over here so that you guys don’t get bored with the huge content. I will try to come up with the second part of this article soon. Also, your comments/suggestions will be included in that article (with proper credits) so keep them coming. ;)

Enjoy U.S. based services outside U.S.

Yeah! There are plenty of U.S. based services that work only for U.S. based IP addresses. Those sitting outside the U.S. can only read about such services on third party websites and cannot use them. This is when VPNs come to rescue. Using VPN one can easily enjoy such services outside U.S. as most of the VPNs use U.S. based IP address.

Access Forums That Have Banned You

Usually, its not you who is banned from a forum rather, it is your IP address (along with that particular account of yours) that is banned from a forum. This is when VPN services come to rescue. While surfing the same forum via a VPN network your IP address will appear to be something different from your original IP address and this is when you are ready to rock. Surf the forum without issues (you will require a new account though).

Download Torrents and don’t get caught!

I know a friend who had to pay a $10k fine along with his Internet connection just because he had download a pirated movie using torrent. If he had used some of the best VPN services then his original IP address would never have been visible to authorities and he would have saved $10k (it’s hell lot of money, right?)

How to Check an iPad’s IP Address

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 12:53 AM PDT

If you own an iPhone, then you know that it can act as a hotspot. What is even more interesting is the fact that an iPad can connect to your iPhone and track your location. In other words, a tethered iPhone can send GPS to Wi-Fi iPad allowing you to track your location. Data can be pulled from the iPhone via a wireless tether and sent to the iPad. This however is only possible if you know the iPad IP address which will enable you to make the few configurations needed to have yourself a tracking iGadget. This is a very simple to set up and it only requires that you have a Wi-Fi nearby and of course an iPad 2.

Navigate to the "Settings" on your iPad and select the "Wi-Fi" option on the sidebar.

Tap on the arrow located next to the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to. The iPad will begin searching for all the available networks that are broadcasting and within range. Select from the list the Wi-Fi network that you want to connect to and tap on the network name to try to attempt to connect to it.

Enter the wireless encryption password if the network is protected. Once you complete the connection process, the iPad will present with a list of all the settings including the IP address it has obtained from the network. You can then use this IP address to connect or access it via other devices on the network.

Alternatively, it is also possible to locate the iPad's IP address by logging into the hotspot device, which could be a router, and accessing its list of connected devices. From here you can easily tell the IP address by identifying its name on the network. Some software applications, like those that come with Cisco devices, also allow you to view the network and determine what devices are connected together with their IP addresses.  However in all cases, the iPad needs to first connect to a network before you can identify its IP address.
